Anne Elizabeth Truitt

December 15, 1954 — November 7, 2017

Anne Elizabeth Truitt, 62, wife of Barry Truitt, a resident of Machipongo, VA, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at her home. A native of Cherry Hill, NJ, she was the daughter of the late William Price and the late Mary Rourke Price.

She is survived by a son, Morgan Truitt, and his wife, Alison Coady, of La Jolla, CA; three brothers; one sister; and one granddaughter, Ana Michele Truitt (born April 23, 2017).

Anne was the Brownsville Preserve Manager for The Nature Conservancy of Virginia and caretaker for the old Federal period historical home located there in a career that spanned over 3 decades. She was immensely proud of her work there, and visitors can see and feel her legacy in each room of the house and its grounds as well as in the restored habitats in the former farm fields. In her capacity as preserve manager, Anne got to meet and work with a diverse group of visitors including Conservancy staff, volunteers, donors, contractors, researchers, and the public. She was quick to make any visitors feel welcomed and in her sometimes quiet, unassuming way, brought so much pleasure to so many people.

Outside of work, when she wasn't on the boat, she could often be found in the kitchen baking and cooking for other people. When asked why, her response was always "Well, so and so are nice people and they've always been good to me". Being on the receiving end of her famous cookies or crab cakes was one of her highest honors and her way of showing she loved you.

She has been described by many people whose lives she touched as a "free spirit", a "real person", "sweet", "hard worker" and a "great lady", and we are all blessed to have had her in our lives.

A celebration service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, Virginia Coast Reserve, P.O. Box 158, Nassawadox, VA 23413.
