Anthony Carl Barbara, MD

Anthony Carl Barbara, MD, 87, husband of Helen Spickofsky Barbara and a resident of Quinby, VA, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at his residence. A native of New York City, NY, he was the son of the late Carlo Barbara and the late Gemma Gerace Barbara. He graduated from medical school, the University of Bologna in Italy, with the highest honors awarded to a medical student since it was founded in 1088. After completing residency at Jersey City Medical Center, he went on to complete three years of surgical residency, one year of surgical fellowship and two years of Pediatric surgery. He one of the first Pediatric Surgeons in the area. He was Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, an avid hunter, golfer, horse breeder, and fisherman. He was the son of an immigrant family, and the first of a large family, to achieve an advanced degree.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by three children, Carl Barbara and his wife, Kimberly, of Franklin Lakes, NJ, Russell Barbara and his wife, Angela, of Hackettstown, NJ, and Toni Barbara Taylor and her husband, Robert, of McKinney, TX; a sister, Nancy Sartori of Sarasota, FL; and six grandchildren, Christopher, John, Chloe, Nicholas, Anthony, and Russell.

A service will be held at a later date in New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, Post Office Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803-0163 or Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation, 160 Essex Street, Suite 101, Lodi, NJ 07644.
