Arthur Underhill

November 30, 1930 — September 9, 2017

Edmond Arthur Underhill, Jr., 86, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, VA. An Eastern Shore native, he was a resident of Wilsonia Neck, near Machipongo, and was the son of the late Edmond Arthur Underhill and the late Lucille Chandler Underhill Gibb.

As a life-long farmer, Arthur was hard-working and dedicated to his passion. He took pride in farming the land on which he was raised along with other parcels throughout Northampton County. Arthur was a conscientious farmer who cared for his crops and maintained his equipment. Despite physical ailments in recent years, Arthur continued to work, hauling himself up in the tractor, truck or combine and even now, there is a crop of soybeans in the field.

Arthur is remembered as saying he never wanted to retire to sit in a rocking chair or to have a "garden" to tend. On many occasions, he would tell his doctors he was going to retire at the end of the year, yet he never specified which year, or decade, he intended to do so.

Arthur was a good provider for his family, immediate and extended. He was known for his patience, kindness, generosity and quiet manner. He loved his wife dearly along with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Johnson's United Methodist Church where he is best remembered for the Christmas trees he supplied and maintained every holiday season for almost 18 years. He enjoyed outdoor activities, watching NASCAR, and rarely ever turned down a Hardee's biscuit.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Frances Riggin Underhill; two daughters, Ellen U. Lowery and her husband, Larry, of Chesapeake, VA, Patricia U. Brady and her husband Eddie of Cape Charles, VA; five grandchildren, Michael Lowery of Chesapeake, VA, Jenny DiRese and her husband, David, of Chesapeake, VA, Ashley Lowery of Poquoson, VA, April Finnigan and her husband, Patrick, of Vienna, VA, and Ian Brady with Leah Hoopes of Eastville, VA; four great grandchildren, David, Joshua, Aubree, and Brady; a sister, Sue U. Flansburg of Newport News, VA; a sister-in-law, Joan W. Riggin of Exmore, VA and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth U. Hogg.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 21, 2017, at 1:30 PM, at Johnson's United Methodist Church with Rev. Clarence Bowen officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Riverside Shore Hospice, P. O. Box 615, Onley, VA 23418 or Johnson's United Methodist Church, 11175 Bayside Road, Machipongo, VA 23405.
