Dimitri Plionis, of Eastville, Virginia, died on December 1, 2018. He was born on February 1, 1942, in Distomon, Greece. He attended the National Technical University of Athens before moving to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a graduate degree from the University of Alabama and a doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins University. In 1972, he married Elizabeth Moore and they raised four children: Alexander, Dean, Nicholas, and Elena. Dimitri worked as an international economic consultant for Ernst & Young and fulfilled his childhood dream of traveling the world, visiting over fifty countries during his lifetime. He retired with his wife to the Eastern Shore of Virginia in 2004, wanting to live by the water. During retirement, he continued his interest in economic development and was instrumental in promoting broadband Internet service for the Eastern Shore. He also served as a volunteer election officer in Northampton County for several years.
He is survived by his wife and children; his daughters-in-law, Erin Plionis, Taryn Sibley, and Elsa Plionis; his grandchildren, Liam, James, and Markos Plionis; his sister, Athina Sagou and her husband, Thanassis; and his brother-in-law, Terrence Moore.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 20, 2018, at noon at St. Charles Catholic Church, 549 Randolph Ave., Cape Charles, VA 23310, with Father J. Michael Breslin officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 415 Crossways Park Drive, Suite D, Woodbury, NY 11797or Riverside Shore Cancer Center, P.O. Box 430, Onancock, VA 23417.
