George Robert Semmens passed away on Saturday morning, September 6th after an evening spent with his children, sister and wife at his home in Cape Charles, Virginia. George was born in Springfield Mass on May 18, 1955. He attended Fayetteville Manlius High School (Manlius, NY) and graduated with 4 and 5 year degrees in Environmental Science and Landscape Architecture from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse University. He owned Semmens Associates, PC which specialized in design of schools, universities, athletic fields, museums, healthcare facilities, corporate headquarters, parks and more. His work can be seen throughout NYC and the world.
George is loved forever by his wife of 47 years Cynthia Bowser Semmens, his children Dr. Katharine Semmens (Lee Walter), Geoffrey Semmens (Isobel Semmens), his grandchildren Clara Walter, Lydia Walter and George Robert Semmens. His beloved family further included his sister Elizabeth Skrainar (Stephen Skrainar), brother-in-law Douglas Bowser (Gail Bowser), niece Erin Bowser, nephews Derek Skrainar and Kyle Bowser. He also enjoyed family times, and ties with extended family. His parents Marian Spencer and Harold Semmens pre-deceased him.
George loved travel and adventures with Cynthia. He also could be seen around his former town wherever his favorite musicians were playing and always had music on- loud! George spent the last 4 years planning and watching his dream home being built to completion overlooking the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia.
George lived his life with integrity, for him there was right and wrong, and he was unafraid to express his opinions. He lived life with enthusiasm, generosity and passion.
A celebration of life will take place November 22, 2025, at his beloved home in Cape Charles. In lieu of flowers please consider donating in George’s name to pancreatic cancer research or the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA).
