Jacob Dirk “Jack” “Jaap” van Ommen, age 89, passed away peacefully in Virginia after a remarkable life defined by adventure, curiosity, independence, and an unwavering love of discovery.
Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1937, Jack immigrated to the United States at the age of 19 and proudly became a U.S. citizen. He went on to serve his adopted country as a member of the U.S. Army, including time stationed in Vietnam, where he served honorably but not in a combat role. Following his service, he spent much of his career in the Pacific Northwest, where he built lasting friendships and established the foundation for a life that would eventually take him around the world.
As a father, Jacob shared his greatest passion, sailing, with his children. He introduced them to life on the water, creating memories and experiences that would stay with them for a lifetime.
Jack devoted his professional life to the lumber industry, working as a lumber broker and earning a reputation for his knowledge, integrity, and passion for the trade. He was known for his outgoing nature, love of conversation, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Upon retirement, Jack chose a path that reflected the way he had always lived, boldly and on his own terms. With a lifelong faith as his foundation, this marked a turning point in his spiritual journey, bringing simplicity and depth to his relationship with God.
He parted with nearly all of his worldly possessions, keeping only his beloved 30-foot wooden sailboat. With that vessel, he embarked on the adventure of a lifetime, sailing solo for 21 years across oceans and continents. Along the way, he visited countless destinations, experienced diverse cultures, met people from every corner of the globe, and forged lasting friendships wherever he dropped anchor. At the age of 80, he achieved a dream few ever realize by successfully circumnavigating the world.
A shipwreck (his second of three!) brought Jack to the shores of Cape Charles, Virginia, where he spent the final decade of his life. There he found a welcoming community and developed deep and lasting friendships. The warmth of Cape Charles became an important chapter in his story, and he became a cherished part of the community. As always, he captivated friends and neighbors with stories from his travels and his endless curiosity about the world.
Those who knew Jack will remember his adventurous spirit, his courage to chart his own course, his generosity, and his remarkable ability to turn strangers into friends. His life serves as a reminder that the world is meant to be explored, that curiosity is a gift, and that the richest treasures are the experiences we gather and the people we meet along the way.
Jack was a father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends, after a brief illness. He is survived by his children, Lisa, Jeannine, John (Jennifer), and Seth. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Rose Marie. He is also survived by his twin brother, his older sister, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and extended family members.
Though his final voyage has ended, the stories, memories, friendships, and inspiration he leaves behind will continue to sail on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
