Listen to Obituary

James Edward “Jimmy” Fitchett of Quinby, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on December 17, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Jimmy held fond childhood memories of growing up in Quinby, living on the old Petey James Farm. From an early age, he and his brother, John “Winkie,” were drawn to the water, learning the waterman’s trade from the old salts at Quinby Harbor. Those early lessons shaped his strong work ethic and deep connection to the Eastern Shore. Jimmy later worked for George Spence, Jr. Seafood, for several years, continuing his life on the water.

Jimmy met the love of his life, Maryann Brown, and proposed within three weeks, beginning a devoted marriage and a family he cherished dearly. With children to raise, Jimmy transitioned from life as a waterman and began a long and dedicated career with the Virginia Department of Transportation. He retired in 2018 as Superintendent of the Eastville Area Headquarters, a role in which he was respected for his leadership, fairness, and commitment to serving the community.

Above all else, Jimmy was a family man. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather who found his greatest joy in time spent with those he loved.

He is survived by his wife, Maryann Brown Fitchett; his children, Richard “RJ” Fitchett (Jessica) and Nicole Buyea (Jeremie); his beloved grandchildren, Braden, Hunter, Trevor, Brookelyn, and Porter; his brothers, Tommy Lee and John “Winkie” Fitchett (Sandra); and his sisters, Kaye, Rosemary, and Suzie.

The family extends a very special thank you to Jimmy’s angels at Riverside Shore Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Doughty Funeral Home, with Pastor Jonathan Carpenter officiating. Friends may join the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
