John Smith Hyslop, Jr.

July 3, 1923 — January 24, 2017

John S. Hyslop Jr., 93, husband of the late Mary Blanche Shackleford Hyslop and a resident of Exmore, Va., passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore in Onancock, Va. A native of Craddockville, Va., he was the son of the late John Smith Hyslop and the late Sadie LeCato Hyslop.

He was retired from Penn Central Railroad, for which he crewed and piloted tugs and barges from the Eastern Shore to western shore ports.

He was a member of Belle Haven United Methodist Church and grew up on bayside farms.

During World War II John served in the U.S. Navy on the battleship USS Texas, supporting Allied troops at Omaha Beach on D-Day and at the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

He is survived by a son, J.S. Hyslop III and his wife, Margie, of Gaithersburg, Md; niece Charlene Harris of Seminole, Fla. and her husband Bob; nephew Robert C. (Bob) Mader Jr. of Hixson, Tenn. and his wife Donna; niece-by-marriage Lou Gladden of Cheriton, Va. and Boulder City, Nev., whom he considered a daughter-in-law; sister-in-law, Indie Shackleford Sheets of Hot Springs, Ark.; and numerous cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Hyslop Mader East; nephew Norman Gladden Jr. whom he considered a son; and brothers-in-law Robert C. Mader Sr., Stanley E. Sheets and Ed East.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Doughty Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Oh officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Haven Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
