John Wesley Spence, 54, passed away on June 16, 2026. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories shared with family, friends, and loved ones.
John will be remembered for the conversations he shared with those he cared about. He enjoyed exchanging ideas and discussing a wide range of topics, from everyday life to the interests and subjects that mattered most to him. Known for the conviction he brought to his viewpoints, he valued meaningful discussion and the relationships those conversations fostered.
Over the years, John was a familiar face to many through his work with Ace Hardware, Cherrystone Aqua Farms, and Eastern Shore Events & Rentals. Along the way, he built friendships and relationships that remained meaningful to him throughout his life.
Some of his happiest times were spent camping and hiking in the mountains of Virginia alongside close friends. Those trips were about more than the destination—they were opportunities to enjoy good company, share stories, and create memories that would be talked about for years to come. A devoted Washington Redskins fan, he followed the team faithfully through every season and rarely missed an opportunity to share his thoughts on the latest game. He also took great pride in serving as President of the Jedi League, a role he embraced and one that reflected the friendships he cultivated over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Linda Lee Spence and John Waverly Spence, and other beloved family members. Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Shawn Spence, and his wife, Heather; their children, Jillian and Porter; his uncle, Brad Sturgis, and his wife, Theresa; his longtime companion, Susan Kellam; many cousins, including Ron Evans, who shared countless conversations and spirited debates with John over the years; loved ones; and friends.
Those who knew him best will remember the conversations they shared, the friendships he valued, and the passions that brought him joy. Though he is no longer with us, the memories, stories, and connections he leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
