Michael Griffin

November 16, 1943 — April 25, 2023

Michael Davis Griffin, 79, of Painter VA, passed away on April 25, 2023. He was born on November 16, 1943, in Anson County, NC, to the late Sandy Griffin Jr. and Lorraine Griffin. He graduated from Walter Williams High School in Burlington, NC, and later attended Elon University in Elon, NC.

Michael was an exceedingly talented and gifted musician who found his passion for music at an early age playing clarinet, and subsequently, made music his lifelong vocation. He enjoyed a successful professional career spanning well over 60 years, exploring many genres of music during his life including classical, jazz, beach, and rock & roll. He was an original member of the Emanons of Elon jazz band (1962). As a Burlington NC native, he especially cherished the many close friendships with other talented musicians in the area.  Most of all, as an accomplished saxophonist, he performed in club bands including The Monzas, Clearsmoke, The Zipper Band, and Fat Jack among many others. Michael was a consummate entertainer/musician and simply wanted all to just have fun and enjoy the music. In 2010, he was inducted into the Beach Music Hall of Fame with The Monzas.

Michael was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother. He was a kind and gentle soul who will be missed by his family and the many, many friends and acquaintances that he touched along the way throughout his lifetime. He truly never met a stranger.  He is survived by his wife Margo Duff Griffin, his children Gina Griffin Floyd (Joe), Brian Griffin (Crystal), and Kelly Griffin Cooper (Marshall), his grandchildren Laura Floyd Morris (Jared), Gibbie Griffin, Gracie Griffin, Griffin Cooper, and Graeson Cooper, and his great-grandchildren Brynleigh Mae Morris and Mackston Morris, his stepsons Troy Butler, and Scott Butler (Amanda), and step grandson Nathan Butler. He is also survived by his brothers Stephen Griffin (Joan), Sandy Griffin III (Betty), and David Griffin (Beth) along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date.
