Norma Hickman

August 12, 1923 — June 7, 2020

Norma Hickman, age 96, passed away on June 7, 2020, surrounded by her family at her home. She was born on August 12, 1923 at Wachapreague, VA, where she lived all her life. She was predeceased by her parents, Brooks and Anna Jorden Phillips, and her husband, Fletcher Hickman.

She was a woman of many talents. As a young woman she was a volunteer ambulance driver for the Wachapreague Volunteer Fire Company, a secretary at Chincoteague Naval Air Station, Unit Secretary at Shore Memorial Hospital (where she retired). She was a viable member of the community as a member of the Eastern Star and was an active member of the Women of the Moose.

With a lively mind and spirit, she had a keen interest in genealogy and history. She was sought by many for her knowledge, memories and stories about families of the Eastern Shore, Wachapreague’s vibrant working waterfront, the Hotel and its guests, other personalities of bygone days, the barrier islands, and epic storms. She lived the best of a simple, yet elegant Shore lifestyle, enjoyed watching the visiting and conservation, playing bridge, volunteering, travel, summers at Silver Beach, and trips to Harrington. She had many close friends throughout her lifetime, and was ready to go anywhere at a moment’s notice.

She is survived by her son, Ben Byrd, Jr. and his wife, Peggy, of Wachapreague; daughter and Ann Crain and her husband, Dan, of St. Leonard, MD; two grandchildren, Brooke Joynes and Benjamin Byrd III; three great-grandchildren, Tyler and Mason Joynes, and Benjamin Byrd IV; and her numerous and very special cousins.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at 2:00 PM, at Wachapreague Cemetery with Pastor Andy Cobb officiating. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Riverside Shore Hospice, P.O. Box 615, Onley, VA 23418.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.doughtyfuneralhome.com

Arrangements were made by Doughty Funeral Home in Exmore, Virginia.
