Warner Smith

Warner Wise Smith, Jr., 84, of Grafton passed away on July 14, 2021, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News after a lengthy illness. Warner was born on August 8, 1936 to the late Warner Wise Smith, Sr. and Irma Robins Smith in Cheriton, VA, on the Eastern Shore. He was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Yorktown.

Warner was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving on CGC Chincoteague as an electrician. He worked at the NASA Langley Research Center for 30 years as an electrician, retiring in October 1991. Warner was a devout Christian and a devoted family man, and he most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Warner was predeceased by his beloved wife, Vivian Schultz Roberts Smith, on June 11, 2021. His sister, Barbara Smith Robinson, and brother-in-law, James Meinhardt, also preceded him in death.

Warner is survived by his sister, Martha Smith Meinhardt of Virginia Beach, and his brother-in-law, Charles “Dick” Robinson of Dayton, OH. He is also survived by his step-son and daughter-in-law, Will and Cathy Roberts of Prospect, TN; his step-daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Herb Fisher of Chesapeake; a niece, Stacey Meinhardt Boswell of Virginia Beach; and a nephew, Mark Robinson of Liberty Township, OH. Warner is also survived by three grandchildren: Josh Fisher and his wife Tiffany of Ponte Vedra, FL, Will (Nathan) Fisher and his wife Tory of Portsmouth, and Ben Fisher of Chesapeake. He is survived by his two great-grandchildren, Wade Fisher and Liam Fisher. Many other members of his extended family survive to remember him also.

A graveside memorial service with Military Honors celebrating Warner’s life will be held Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 2:00PM at Cape Charles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
